Skin Cycling Schedule
A 4-night rotation system for safely using actives like exfoliants and retinoids without irritation.
Why Skin Cycling?
Skin cycling is a rotation system designed by dermatologists to allow your barrier to recover while still benefiting from active ingredients. Instead of using the same products daily, you alternate between active nights and recovery nights, preventing over-use damage and irritation while maintaining efficacy.
This is particularly useful for retinoids and chemical exfoliants—both powerful but potentially irritating if used daily.
The 4-Night Cycle
Night 1: Exfoliation Night
Use a chemical exfoliant (AHA or BHA) at 2-3x per week frequency. Look for glycolic acid (AHA) or salicylic acid (BHA) at clinical concentrations (10-20% for AHA, 1-2% for BHA).
Why: Exfoliants remove dead skin cells from the surface, improve texture, and enhance penetration of other actives. Using it only every 4 nights prevents over-exfoliation and barrier damage.
Night 2: Retinoid Night
Apply a retinoid (retinol, retinaldehyde, or prescription retinoid). Start with low concentrations (0.25-0.5%) and increase gradually as skin builds tolerance.
Why: Retinoids improve fine lines, firmness, and cell turnover. Spacing them 4 nights apart prevents irritation and allows the barrier to recover between applications.
Nights 3 & 4: Recovery Nights
Use only gentle, hydrating, barrier-supportive products. Focus on ceramides, niacinamide, and humectants. No other actives.
Why: Your barrier needs 2 nights to fully repair after exfoliants and retinoids. This prevents chronic irritation, sensitization, and the "barrier is compromised" cycle that many active users get stuck in.
Sample Cycling Routine
Night 1 (Exfoliation): Gentle cleanser → BHA/AHA → hydrating essence → moisturizer
Night 2 (Retinoid): Gentle cleanser → retinol (wait 15 min) → niacinamide serum → rich moisturizer
Night 3 (Recovery): Gentle cleanser → hydrating toner → ceramide serum → heavy moisturizer
Night 4 (Recovery): Gentle cleanser → glycerin toner → moisturizer + facial oil (optional)
Rules of Skin Cycling
- Never mix actives: Don't use exfoliants and retinoids on the same night. This causes severe irritation.
- Buffer with a hydrating step: Always apply retinoids to clean skin, then wait 15-20 minutes before hydrating layers.
- Start low: Begin with lower concentrations of exfoliants and retinoids, then increase as skin adapts.
- Always use SPF the next day: Both exfoliants and retinoids increase UV sensitivity.
- Recovery nights are non-negotiable: Skipping them defeats the purpose and increases sensitization risk.
- Listen to your skin: If irritation persists, extend recovery nights to 3 per cycle or reduce active frequency.
Who Benefits Most
Skin cycling is ideal for those with: normal-to-oily skin, signs of aging, congestion, or uneven texture. It's less necessary for truly sensitive skin (use milder actives like bakuchiol instead) or those with active barrier damage (focus on repair first).
